The Frontier Issues of Gear Metrology and its Progress



Considering centennial history of gear metrology, it can be perceived that the measurement principle developing from “comparison method” to “meshing motion method” then to “model based method”, with the parallel evolution of measurement technology through “mechanical-based method” to “Mechanical and electrical integrated method”, then to current method of “integration of optical-mechanical-electronical with information technology”, and accompanying the revolution on technology of acquiring measuring result from “indicator plus visible reading” to “recorder plus human check” then to “automatic computer analysis plus automatic adjustment of manufacturing system”. It should be said that till now the conventional measurement technology of gears, ranging from large gears to fine-pitch gears, has been developed quite mature. However, with the development of science and technology as well as the demand for major projects, more and more unconventional gears are employed. As a result, it leads to some difficult problems on gear metrology, summarized as: “extreme cases” of gear measurement; rapid detection of full information of gears, transmission of measurement values and traceability, as well as integrated error theory. Based on the reviews of the revolution of theory and technology of gear metrology, the fundamental principle and key technology of frontier issues on gear metrolgy were discussed, especially domestic and abroad research progress, and the possible solutions for the future were investigated.
